Sandman_777 Dislike  Over time, I've been more disgusted with the US. No offense to anyone in there, it's just the whole mentality, the ideology and the people who ran it. Now that Obama is in, everybody wants him to work miracles, but he's in a deep hole dug by Bush. I like Obama though, and I have confidence that he will change some things. Unlike our idiotic Prime Minister up north in Canada...

zomgMonkey Dislike  I am honestly asamed of the way our country has gone in the past few years. Starting illegal wars, impeding on the rights of it's citizens and even blatantly going against the words of it's people. The USA was once the greatest country in the world, however, the apathy of it's own citizens has led to it's decline and eventually it's downfall.

cityeyes   While I might not like the people in charge, I live here and I know many, many, MANY people who break the world's stereotype of our people.

iain2345 Hall of fame  One of the world's few truly democratic nations, though, as in all such democracies, the people sometimes fail to uphold that wisest tradition of government.

Ordained Archbishop Aymond prepares for New Orleans
A: Well there were rumors and people would joke about it. Usually, whenever there’s a diocese open in the United States, particularly, people always say ‘Oh, the native son will go back’, and that rarely happens. So it was rumored and joked about enough that I said ‘That’ll never happen’, and so when I did get the call from the Pope’s representative, Anencio in the United States, Archbishop Samby, I really was surprised, very surprised and as those conversations go. He says, ‘The Holy Father has [Read more]

Acadian history brought to life
They avoided taking sides in the French and English colonial power struggle. Even so, after the eventual English victory, Acadians who didn't manage to escape and hide in the forests were deported in 1755. They were shipped to France, to settlements along the East Coast of the United States and to other distant spots. Out of the estimated 15,000 Acadians thought to be living in the region, more then 10,000 were exiled. [Read more]

Feature: Cape Coasters: Have Your Apologies Ready!
In the wake of President Barack Hussein Obama’s first official visit to the African continent – actually, sub-Saharan Africa – since assuming his august and pioneering reins of governance of the United States of America, reams of mini-essays and articles have been written and published in anticipation of this momentous occasion. But that President Obama would decide to touch land in Ghana come July 10, 2009, has naturally generated a lot of hysteria. In all the flurry of excitement, though, what [Read more]

Democracy Crisis? What Democracy?
The fact that large numbers of Americans did not take to the streets day after day in protest, as in Iran, is not something we can be proud of. Perhaps if the CIA, the Agency for International Development (AID), several US government-run radio stations, and various other organizations supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (which was created to serve as a front for the CIA, literally) had been active in the United States, as they have been for years in Iran, major street protests woul [Read more]

Obama is promising a lot more than he can afford
Meanwhile, Obama is trying to save the planet and reshape the United States' health-care system. The first task will be fantastically expensive. The second does not have to be, but probably will be. A president who refused to put off unpleasant decisions, as Obama promised during his inauguration, would be honest about all this. He would tell Americans that stopping global warming means higher energy prices, and that arresting health-care inflation means cutting back on medical procedures that p [Read more]

Health groups back tobacco treaty
I've been working in this for a long, long time on an international basis, and it's been a source of embarrassment to me that many countries were far ahead of the United States in terms of tobacco control and regulation, Durbin said. I think that we now have a chance to at least stand up and show some leadership with the passage and (Obama's) signature on this bill. So I think we're in a better position now than we've ever been. Michael Gerson: In Iraq, US finds success few expected
None of these achievements is perfect or permanent. But foreign policy success is judged by comparative, not absolute, standards. The comparison here is to an American withdrawal two years ago -- which would have been Vietnam II, and worse. AQI would have controlled whole regions of Iraq -- it had already established a provisional government in Anbar -- gaining a base of operations against friends in the Middle East, against allies in Europe and against the United States. With Iran's help, Iraq' [Read more]

Saddam said he considered the Iranian threat so serious, it was the main reason he decided not to let U.N. weapons inspectors re-enter Iraq.
