Where the Boys Are
We like Up. We really do. But it really got some of us here thinking about the complete lack of female protagonists in the entirety of Pixar's impressive decade-plus output. Perhaps Up magnified this fact because a) it's the most explicitly stated “Boy's Adventure” film they've done so far, with its father-grandson bonding and its boy-scout sidekick, and b) because it foregrounds so literally the divide between the space of male-action and female-domesticity, even as it fights agains [Read more]

Disney's Toy Story Toys Get an Upgrade
The Ultimate Buzz Lightyear Robot lives up to its name. Standing 16 inches tall and sporting seven motors, more than 100 phrases, and responding to voice, this goes beyond toy. When you first take Buzz out of the box, he thinks he's a real Space Ranger. If you say “Star Command” he tries to contact Star Command for real. Once you say “You're A Toy!” his behavior changes accordingly. You can control Buzz with a 15-function wireless remote control, and the controller can be [Read more]

Coppola: The Godfather Should Have Stayed One Movie
I don?t think Godfather ever should have had more than one movie, actually. It was not a serial, it was a drama. The first movie wrapped up everything. To make more than one Godfather was just greed. Basically, making a movie costs so much money that they want it to be like Coca-Cola: you just make the same thing over and over again to make money, which is what they?re doing now. But Godfather was not really a serial, you know? [Read more]

The Geek Beat: Just So Stories
I'm not going to review UP because it would be the umpteenth review you've read in a handful of days, and it's not as though I'm going to be the one sour lemon of the bunch. Please. It's PIXAR. Hating one of their films is like hating your own mom. But I think UP is more than a fantastic movie. I think it might go down as an important moment of animation, storytelling, film making, and even this nebulous thing called geekdom. That's a lot to put on its helium-hoisted shoulders, I'll grant yo [Read more]

Review: Pixar's 'Up'
About midway through watching Up I realized I have a big problem with Pixar. Each Pixar film is so fantastic and I watch it so many times with my son that the previous one is fresh on my mind when I go to see the new one. How is that a problem? Well, I find myself starting to compare the current movie with the previous one and that isn't a fair judgment to pass. And so it was with Up as I initially found it lacking the same magic of WALL-E. But that is part of the point. Up has a magic all to i [Read more]
