The Office

The Office Edit

(2001-2003, United Kingdom)   |   |   |

( fr ) The Office is a Golden Globe Award and Bafta Award-winning British television comedy that first aired in the UK on BBC Two on 9 July 2001. Created, written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the program is about the day-to-day lives of office employees in the Slough, Berkshire branch of the fictitious Wernham-Hogg Paper Company. Although fictional and scripted, the program takes the form of a documentary (a fictional documentary, i.e. a mockumentary), with the presence of the camera often acknowledged. After the show's critical success an American version was launched an entire four years after the original, premiering on NBC on 24 March 2005.

After all, Gervais proved his talents as both a creative force and an actor in The Office and Extras, two programs destined to go down as some of the sharpest in the history of television. That said, we're not entirely sure film is the right medium for him. It's not that we disliked his first turn as a leading man in last fall's Ghost Town — or, for that matter, his supporting work in the Night at the Museum films — but to us, what makes him so great are the subtle nuances he's able to bring to his characters over the course of a television seaso [Read more]

Problems With NBC's 'Parks & Recreation'
There's more trouble for Jeff Zucker and Ben Silverman. NBC's upcoming Universal Media Studios sitcom Parks And Recreation was supposed to be a real winner since the mockumentary comes from Greg Daniels and Michael Schur of The Office and stars Amy Poehler. I say supposed because there are problems galore in the rough-cut pilot, according to a March 18th-dated Consumer [...] [Read more]

Idris Elba on Moving From The Wire to The Office
Idris Elba, the British actor who memorably portrayed The Wire's Stringer Bell, has had a hit-or-miss post-HBO career; he’s been in stuff you’ve probably seen (American Gangster, 28 Weeks Later), as well as stuff you probably wish you hadn’t (Prom Night, The Unborn).
