( fr ) Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 stop motion animated musical film about the inhabitants of Halloween Town who take over Christmas one year, directed by stop-motion animator Henry Selick. The film is loosely based on drawings and a poem by Tim Burton, and he served as co-producer. He did not direct the film as is sometimes believed, but he was still heavily involved.

Spanish 'Birdsong' is a strange call from the wilderness
Now re-imagine the Nativity tale as scripted by absurdist playwright Samuel Beckett (Waiting for Godot), shot in stark black and white by Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal) and paced by French writer-director-sonambulist Alain Resnais (Last Year at Marienbad). This is an old-school foreign flick that's a throwback to the glory days of the arthouse, when people weren't afraid of obtuse weirdness or subtitles. [Read more]

A new dimension to movie-going
Going to the movies will never be the same again with the introduction of 3D which is hitting the big screen, and audiences, in a big way. It was in 2008 that movie-goers were given a first hint of things to come with news of 3D movies on the horizon and Singapore cinemas investing in the infrastructure to be able to offer audiences a richer experience from the big screen. After a tentative start, a slew of 3D movies are set to open in Singapore cinemas, with Monsters vs Aliens which opened 28 M [Read more]

Poison alter ego: Deadly Nightshade
The dark, intensely sweet berries of deadly nightshade may taste appealing, but ingesting one too many could be a fatal mistake. The berries, along with the leaves, stem and roots, of this 5-foot-tall plant are full of the alkaloid toxins atropine, hyoscyamine and solanine, all of which affect the nervous system. Simply handling deadly nightshade, which is native to Europe, Africa and North America, causes skin irritation; and experts caution neither freezing nor cooking the fruit destroys the t [Read more]

Dear Dracula, Here's One Boy Who Prefers You to SantaHow long has it been since Hollywood has splurged on a holiday horror movie for the whole family? Well, let's just say that impressionable youngsters who got their first taste of spooky sweetness from The Nightmare Before Christmas are now plenty old enough to drive themselves to the movies. And apparently that fact hasn't been lost on the folks at Kickstart Entertainment (who gave us the not-so-family friendly Angelina Jolie packing heat in W [Read more]

Coraline review
Coraline may not be for everyone, but it will be a blast for fans of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. It's a stop-motion animated film that's full of imagination and creativity that is probably best for anyone over the age of ten. The only downside was not being able to catch this in 3-D while it was in theaters. So let's cross our fingers and hope the DVD release is in both 2-D and 3-D. Theatrical Release Date: February 6, 2009 DVD Release Date: July 21st Director: Henry Seli [Read more]

Coraline: animation by Neil Gaiman
There is something else unusual about Coraline. In an era of quick-fire computer-generated (CG) animation, it was created using the painstaking stop-motion process. This highly labour-intensive technique involves manipulating models in tiny increments, photographing them to create the illusion of motion. Each of those hundreds of Scottie dogs was individually built. It certainly kept a lot of artists employed, says the director, whose team spent more than 18 months shooting the picture.
