The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect Edit

(2004, United States)   |   |   |   |   |   |

( fr ) The Butterfly Effect is a 2004 American science fiction thriller film starring Ashton Kutcher, Amy Smart, Eric Stoltz, and others. The title is a reference to the butterfly effect, which theorises that a change in something seemingly innocuous, such as a flap of a butterfly's wings, may have unexpected larger consequences in the future, such as the path a tornado will travel. The movie was followed by a largely unrelated direct-to-DVD sequel, The Butterfly Effect 2.

`Effect' goes mainstream
Question: No doubt you're already familiar with the greenhouse effect (warming of the Earth), the butterfly effect (small input, huge output), and the Doppler effect (changing pitch of a moving sound source). But how do these barely scratch the effect surface? Answer: Scientists and technologists today have mainstreamed the term for naming all sorts of cultural things, says Paul McFedries in IEEE Spectrum magazine. Economic Extinction of the Least Financially Fit
I thought that he would then explain that his own work and that of Mr. Mandelbrot have proved, conclusively, that ?complexity? is a guarantee of eventual failure, as having a lot of moving parts means that there are more things that can go wrong, any one of which is a potential ?butterfly in the Amazon randomly flapping its wings? that will cause catastrophic failure in the near future, and all those parts means that there are more things that WILL go wrong in the future, as one by one each of t [Read more]

But O?Riley is the PWX champion, a title taken from Deaner under questionable circumstances contributing directly to commissioner Derek Wylde?s return to the ring. Acting as guest referee during the title match, Wylde had stripped O?Riley of a chair he was about to use on Deaner, and in an attempt to strike O?Riley, inadvertently hit ?the mulleted one? by mistake. O?Riley took full advantage, pouncing on Deaner for a finishing three-count Wylde had no choice but to administer. [Read more]

DAILY SCIENCE FIX - PHILOSOPHY - What does it all mean?
What does it all mean? Its Saturday night, so its time for the science to give way to philosophy.Last week we discussed reductionism...the idea that everything can be explained by looking at its components. In the comments everyone had their own perspective...and that's great because as was discussed, no one really knows anyway. Part of the conversation veered towards determinism and indeterminism. Indeterminism says that at least some things are unpredictable or happen randomly. Determinism is [Read more]

Images from Buntport Theater's The Squabble. Photos by Samantha Schmitz. Some might be a bit off-put to read that a theater company is adapting an absurd 1835 Ukrainian short story that scholars have classified as grotesque realism. Don't be frightened . . . It's Buntport! That means it'll be inventive, accessible and, yes, even fun. The Squabble typifies all the qualities that make Buntport a singular company. It unearths an obscure source story and transforms it with intelligence an [Read more]
