The Brothers Karamazov

The Brothers Karamazov Edit

(1880, Россия)

( fr ) The Brothers Karamazov is the last novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, generally considered the culmination of his life's work. Dostoevsky spent nearly two years writing The Brothers Karamazov, which was published as a serial in The Russian Messenger and completed in November of 1880. Dostoevsky intended it to be the first part in an epic story titled The Life of a Great Sinner, but he died less than four months after publication. The book is written on two levels: on the surface it is the story of a patricide in which all of a murdered man's sons share varying degrees of complicity but, on a deeper level, it is a spiritual drama of the moral struggles between faith, doubt, reason, and free will. The novel was composed mostly in Staraya Russa, which is also the main setting of the book.

Gift of the write stuff can lead to problems
On the other hand, I've never forbid my sons any book that caught their fancy. You want your kids to take up dangerous ideas? Of course you do, because how else are they going to separate the intellectual wheat from the chaff? Let me suggest a house full of books and a well-used library card. Failing a house full of books, you can't go wrong with the works of Shakespeare, The Brothers Karamazov, The Grapes of Wrath, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the Bible, A Confederacy of Dunces a [Read more]

Apocalypse Sometime: Ron Currie Jr.'s Everything Matters!
Mostly, it's a family saga. Junior's mother, Debbie, is an alcoholic whose 64-ounce Turbo Chug! mug is an increasingly poor cover for her vodka habit. His father, John, a war vet whose right pinkie and ring fingers were sliced off by an enraged Vietnamese prostitute—thus ending a promising career with the Astros—pulls day shifts in a factory and works nights in a bakery. Junior is a precocious child—the fourth-smartest person in the history of the world, according to the voic [Read more]

A challenge for fathers
I loved my father. He had a tremendous sense of humor, but he also was strict and set boundaries that I didn't always appreciate at the time. I always knew he loved me. Once when I was 8 or 9, I angered him so much that he threatened to punish me. I looked up at him and, before I knew what I was doing, blurted out, Papa, I'm really sorry. Do what you have to do — but I know you still love me.” To my astonishment, he leaned down, put his arms around me and said with a tenderness that [Read more]

Three imperatives for Christ-centered church growth
The second imperative is for the church leadership to follow Christ. Church leaders need to focus on being Christ-like. We need to live as Jesus did. Our personal Christ-likeness requires we do a great deal of introspection where we examine ourselves closely in the mirror to see where we are lined up with Christ and identify those areas where we are not. As Christian leaders we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard, not for some legalistic cause. We abide by a higher standard because we de [Read more]

Withers: Ten random thoughts
One day this may once again become a news site…. After the ownership became American the quality of journalism went gone way down. While globally it is understood that there is a dumbing down of America, that is still painful to see happening.A once great nation of world class thinkers is now a cash cow for the rising Asian Middle East nations. America is going from super power to stupid coward. [Read more]

Hey dude, what are you reading?
Nice topic. Love the Anti-Oprah Book Club.I've been in an all-male book club for five years now. I wouldn't say that we read exclusively books written for/at men, but I will say that as the choice for each new book circles around the members, some tend to choose more masculine books than others.Surprisingly, I think we stay on topic quite a bit better than the cliche about typical book clubs that spend 10 minutes on the book and 2 hours on sports/television/movies/whatever. We once had a four- [Read more]

Pushkin Heroine in Distress (and Clubbers Doing the Zombie Shuffle)
In “Onegin,” presented by the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg, Russia, on Friday night at New York City Center, Mr. Eifman takes inspiration from Pushkin's treasured novel in verse. In the past he has retold — or plundered — the tales of other revered Russian writers, including Tolstoy (“Anna Karenina”) and Dostoyevsky (“The Brothers Karamazov”). With Mr. Eifman's amateurish rendering of “Eugene Onegin,” pretty much all that remains are t [Read more]
