Drink of the week: Bryant Lake Bowl's Dude-A-Reeno
exterior photo of BLB by snaxx/flickrDude-A-Reeno$7.00Bryant Lake Bowl810 W. Lake St., Mpls.612.825.3737websiteInspired by The Dude in The Big Lebowski, I have no doubt that this would be a great drink to have while wearing a bathrobe. Better yet , you can have one on the sidewalk of the BLB while watching the world go by.The Dude-A-Reeno blends Stoli Vanil Vodka, Kahlua, and Bailey's into peaceful harmony. This is a cocktail that causes drink-envy--don't be surprised if the idea to have one cat [Read more]

From sunrises to bowling, 'real' is better than 'removed'
I like what Michael Stanley said. The valedictorian addressed his fellow classmates during Sanford High School's graduation ceremony at Cobb Stadium on Friday night. He spoke of his recent fishing trip up Maine and described the brilliant dawn that enveloped him as he stood by the lakeshore and tied on a fly. The image stayed with him — enough so that it inspired his valedictory address.Stanley framed the sunrise in terms of our modern world, in which our windows to it are more often than n [Read more]

Another blown chance
After a time, U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, a lifelong Yooper and, unlike Engler, a Democrat, got on the bandwagon. Rather than stick them in an existing maximum-security prison, he suggested renovating a recently closed prison, Camp Manistique. Other politicians followed. We would need to harden the facility to make it maximum security, said state Rep. Steve Lindberg of Marquette. But given the economy, if there were going to be a good number of jobs coming out of this ... Unemployment is at doubl [Read more]

You can't dampen the spirit of the Gospel Music Festival
One crew (Ebone') even eschewed singing altogether, donning multicolored tutus to perform a cringe-worthy interpretive dance that could have been inspired by The Dude's landlord in The Big Lebowski. New Orleans' Voices of Distinction was an early highlight, bringing a welcome, Crescent City swing to Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come. Maurice Griffin proved more optimistic than the Little Engine That Could, making bold proclamations (I want to let this dying world know there's hope out ther [Read more]

Lack of volunteers leads church to take break from sheltering homeless
Oh yeah, he laughs, I remember it. It was chaotic. Even in the beginning we had 25 or 30 people coming in. We were still trying to develop a rhythm and pattern for everything we did. First thing we did was get everybody checked in. Then we sat in a circle and talked and prayed. Then we let them start taking showers, and then it was lights out at 9:30, but not everybody went straight to sleep. At that time we had quite a few volunteers coming in. [Read more]
