( fr ) The Beatles were a rock and pop band from Liverpool, England that formed in 1960. During their career, the group primarily consisted of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals). Although their initial musical style was rooted in 1950s rock and roll and skiffle, the group worked with different musical genres, ranging from Tin Pan Alley to psychedelic rock. Their clothes, style and statements made them trend-setters, while their growing social awareness saw their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s. After the band broke up in 1970, all four members embarked upon successful solo careers. The Beatles are one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music, selling over one billion records internationally.

News Roundup: Paul McCartney, Live Nation, James Murphy, Hold Steady
--Paul McCartney hasn't performed much lately, favoring one-off gigs instead of touring. (In April, he performed a Beatles-heavy set at Coachella). But New York fans will get a chance to see the Wings legend (kidding) when he performs July 17 and 18 at Citi Field, the Mets' new home. McCartney has a thing about baseball stadiums. The Beatles were the first to play Shea Stadium in 1965, and McCartney played at the stadium's farewell concert with Billy Joel last year. Tickets for the New York show, which will probably be too expensive for all of us, go on sale June 15.--Tickets bought during Live Nation's No Service Fee Wednesday promotion today include, well, service fees. One of them is a parking fee, which apparently does not pay for a parking space and is required even if a fan doesn't d [Read more]

Weird at My School: The Bad Plus
by DJ El Toro The intersection of legit jazz — not that “smooth” crap you always hear in taxis en route to the airport — and rock ‘n’ roll usually marks some tough terrain. “We started this whole thing,” he declares. “Once we started we realised there were other people as bored as we were and there were not many places to play, so we had to be creative in finding clubs and ballrooms to perform in. It was very 1970s. It was due for a change. We started in 1970 and before that you had to be The Beatles or the Rolling Stones to get a record contract. It took us three years to get a record deal but when we did it opened up doors for everybody in New [Read more]

Manufacturers' action plan harks back to Wilson era
Larry Elliott The Guardian, Wednesday 1 July 2009 The Beatles were about to make it big in 1963 when Harold Wilson said the Britain of the future would be forged in the white heat of the technological revolution. Almost five decades, four recessions and millions of lost factory jobs later, 60s-style interventionism is back ? and it is business that is calling for it.Government, according to the manufacturers' organisation, the EEF, needs to rethink the laissez-faire approach to industr [Read more]

The Sixties, By Jenny Diski
In truth, the only thing that is absolutely certain is that the music then was better. Yes. In the early Seventies, I remember asking people a year or two younger which of the bands coming up were going to take over from The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground and The Incredible String Band. It took me years to realise that this was not going to happen. Music apart, Jenny Diski's eloquent and probing The Sixties is full of doubts and queries. This is not one of those b [Read more]

Goodbye King of Pop
One of the world’s greatest musicians—next only in public stature to The Beatles and Elvis Presley—left us on Thursday, a couple of months before he turned 51, leaving behind a short will of controversies but a long legacy of music that is pure gold: over 750 million (and counting)
albums sold worldwide and 13 Grammies. Jackson, who was a four-year-old when he started singing, will probably go down in history as breaking the “race barrier” on MTV in the Eighties, with his compelling narr [Read more]

Top 10: The architecture of rock concerts (part II)
You can?t get a more hardcore venue than Denver?s Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Nestled in the outstanding natural forms of the Red Rocks Park, the open-air arena, designed by architect Burnham Hoyt, has hosted musical legends including The Beatles (1964), Grateful Dead (1978-84) and U2 (1983). Jethro Tull?s infamous 1971 concert descended into a violent riot when ticketless fans charged the stage and began hurling rocks at policemen.
