( fr ) Star Wars is an influential science fantasy saga and fictional universe created by writer/producer/director George Lucas during the 1970s. The saga began with the film Star Wars, which was released on May 25, 1977. The film, later retitled Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, became a pop culture phenomenon, and spawned five more feature films and an extensive collection of licensed books, comics, video games, spin-off films, television series, and other products all of which are set within a fictional 'galaxy far, far away.'

Live-Action Star Wars Series In Pre-Production In Australia?
Remember the time when rumors that a live-action Star Wars television series was in pre-production would have ignited swirls of fan frenzy? How things have changed. Now SciFiWire's report that writers are being assembled down under is just another line item in a crowded RSS feed. The show has long had a planned start date of late '09, so this report goes along with what we've already known. Assuming we do see a Star Wars series premiering next year, what will it actually be?Goerge Lucas, who will be relatively hands-off as an Executive Producer, has said several times that the show would run at least 100 episodes, and at one point there was word that could be upped to 400. He has described the show as Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space and repeatedly claimed that no major characters from [Read more]

VOTD: Interview With 27-Year-Old George Lucas
This extremely rare one hour interview with George Lucas was conducted by film journalist Gene Youngblood on on Los Angeles Public Television Station KCET. This in-depth interview is notable because it was conducted before American Graffiti or Star Wars, while a then-27-year-old Lucas was promoting his first feature, THX 1138. [Read more]

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Takes Bonnaroo
Though it doesn't reach the lofty heights of Triumph at the Star Wars Screening or Triumph at the Tonys, the mere fact that Conan O'Brien's attack dog deigned to take on Bonnaroo suggests a certain apex of mainstream acceptance/derision. A dog puppet humping a turntable is actually an excellent way to encapsulate the whole DJ School concept; his extensive, awkward interview with the lass in the tent camp brought to mind a line from the Star Wars episode: You can choose from all kinds of guys who have no idea how to please you. Passing on a Twitter joke shows remarkable restraint.(Part 2 after the jump.) [Read more]

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Takes Aim at Bonnaroo
Ever since we bumped into Triumph the Insult Comic Dog at Bonnaroo a few weekends back, we've been anxiously awaiting the segment he spent the weekend filming. As any longtime fan of Conan O'Donnell will agree, Triumph is at his most raucous when he is given the opportunity to take jabs at fringe groups of society: Star Wars nerds, Michael Jackson supporters, and now, hippies. Over the course of nearly eight hilarious minutes, Triumph tears into everything from the employability of the concertgoers (Bonnaroo is a chance for people to have four days of peace, love, and music to break up the other 361 days of unemployment) to the Beastie Boys (Could you possibly look any more like three old Jews? You're like a living Pep Boys logo!), and even sings along to the chorus of Tenth Avenue Freeze- [Read more]

Bonnaroo 2009: Bruce Springsteen Goes Phish-ing While Trent Reznor Says Good-bye
When the Bonnaroo organizers announced back in February that Bruce Springsteen and Phish would be headlining this year's festival, we decided it was high time to put aside our general disdain for the pungent smell of patchouli and book a ticket to fly out to the woods of Tennessee for a weekend of communal awesomeness. And wow, what a great decision that ended up being! Putting aside for now the fact that spending the weekend in the refugee-camp–like surroundings of Tent City is a serious test of both physical and mental endurance, the weekend provided enough musical and comedic highlights to not only make up for the (at times) oppressive weather conditions, but also to convince us that this is something we should be doing every year. Follow along for some of the highlights! When we a [Read more]

VOTD: R2-D2 Falls In Love With a Fire Hydrant
In 1980, Sesame Street had a Star Wars crossover episode which featured R2-D2 and C3-PO landing on earth to hang out with the Sesame Street gang. Part of the episode involved R2-D2 falling in love with a fire hydrant. I kid you not. Video after the jump.via: Fanboy [Read more]

Michael Bay Makes The Big Bucks
It's a slow news day so I thought I'd point out a story over at Forbes Magazine that profiles director Michael Bay from a financial perspective. The bottom line is that Bay makes some serious cash. Here are some interesting tidbits I learned from the article. When there wasn't enough money to bring back the crew to shoot a sequence where Will Smith punches out a bad guy in Bad Boys, the first time feature director put up $25,000 of his $125,000 fee to shoot the scene.Bay declined upfront pay for Pearl Harbor in favor of a 50% split of what remained after the studio recouped production and advertising costs. The film grossed $450 million; and Bay made $40 million. Bay gets an estimated 8% on Transformer toys tied to movies, second only to that of George Lucas, who gets an estimated 15% roya [Read more]

3D Avatar vs. 2D Avatar, and the Importance of Aspect Ratios
Courtesy of an audio recording made by the Marketsaw folk, the vast majority of us who were not lucky enough to attend James Cameron's special appearance at the Santa Monica Aero Theatre can now eavesdrop on all 43 minutes of it. Lots of discussion then, on everything from the film's CG to the Simulcam system that Cameron is using to visualise the film's FX on set, but the key detail was perhaps the rather surprising announcement that the 2D and 3D versions of Avatar will each be released in a different aspect ratio. The 2D version will play in Cinemascope - as per Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings, say - while the 3D version will fill out a 1.78:1 (or 16:9) widescreen shape - as per most modern TV sets. Here's Cameron's rationale for this, as explained on the night:For Avatar we're shooti [Read more]

‘77 Movie Trailer
Before Fanboys was ever announced, there was another Star Wars-themed project in the works, an indie coming of age drama titled 5-25-77 from Patrick Read Johnson (director of Angus, writer of Dragonheart). Many geeks will reccognize that date as the day that Star Wars was released in theaters. The movie went into production in 2004, [...] [Read more]

Must Watch: First Trailer for Star Wars Geek Drama '77'
I'm not sure why everyone is so fascinated with making movies about Star Wars recently, but I don't mind, I'll see every last one, I'm a big Star Wars geek. I've actually heard of the movie 77 before, back when it was previously known as 5-25-77 - which, for those who don't know, is the exact day that A New Hope first came out. Unlike the movie Fanboys, this is more of a coming-of-age drama than a road trip comedy. There's also a lot of great movie references, as the story is about a wannabe filmmaker whose life changes the moment he sees Star Wars. Every true self-proclaimed geek should be watching this trailer right now.Watch the first trailer for Patrick Read Johnson's 77:[flv:http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/77-trailer-full.flv http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/77- [Read more]

Star Wars Turns 32 Years Old
32 years ago today, on May 25th 1977,  George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope was released in movie theaters. R2-D2 in Star Trek? Astronaut To Watch New Star Trek Movie in Space
Remember when George Lucas hid E.T. creatures in Star Wars: Episode I? Vulture Exclusive: George Lucas’s Star Trek Review
Many have already pointed out the similarities between J.J. Abrams's box-office-conquering Star Trek reboot and another popular space-based movie franchise. But what does Star Wars creator George Lucas think about the film? We ran into the man himself last Saturday — albeit very briefly — at a pre-event reception for the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, and we asked. I liked Star Trek growing up and I've seen the new one, Lucas told us, shortly before taking off at warp speed in the opposite direction. It's good. I liked it. But, we wondered, was there anything he'd have changed about the movie? No, because I would never do a Star Trek. Sounds like a rave!Read more posts by Jada YuanFiled Under: george lucas, j.j. abrams, movies, star trek, star wars, trek wars [Read more]

Is J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek Just Star Wars With Spock Ears?
Maybe! Star Trek rebooter J.J. Abrams has made no secret of his intense hatred for Trek and its plastic-ear-wearing followers, or his overwhelming preference for George Lucas's more popular space-based film saga. So is it any surprise that his new movie is so similar to Star Wars? In today's Observer, Christopher Rosen points out the parallels.Mr. Abrams’ perfect summer confection is literally the movie Star Wars fans had hoped The Phantom Menace would be: a fun, exciting, realistically unrealistic thrill ride, filled to the brim with a devil-may-care sense of humor and earned bravado. You can really see Mr. Abrams’ crossover work in the way he portrayed the characters. There’s Kirk-as-Han Solo; Young Spock-as-Luke Skywalker; Future Spock-as-Obi-Wan; Scotty-as-Chewy; Uhur [Read more]

SOTC Porn Day Continues: Peter Saville's Erotic House of Pop, Underway Now
Speaking of porn, legendary Joy Division album artist, designer, and photographer Peter Saville is currently shooting some in real time, which you can stream live on the internet even as I write this. The explanation? As backdrop to an editorial story for July 2009 Wallpaper* magazine, Peter Saville's febrile imagination constructs an imaginary 'Erotic House' of Pop perversity, sexualising an entire post-modern environment and fetishising furniture, fashion and flesh alike. Right. At the moment, a women in a full bodysuit of silver lame is draping herself over what appears to be an extremely futuristic chair--it looks not unlike some combination of different Star Wars helmets. This would've been a much more comfortable location for that Dim Mak video.Peter Saville's 'Erotic House' of Pop [ [Read more]
