Stanley Kubrick

Stanley Kubrick Edit

(1928-1999, United States)   |   |   |   |   |   |   |

( fr ) Stanley Kubrick (July 26, 1928 - March 7, 1999) was an American film director and producer. He is widely considered to have been one of the most innovative, talented, and influential filmmakers in cinematic history. Kubrick's films, most of which were adapted from literary sources, are characterized by a strong emphasis on technical perfection, often involving innovative or specially invented technology, unusual and economical storytelling, and a sardonic wit. His trademarks include emotionally charged close-ups, long reverse tracking shots, extensive use of zoom lenses, and the original and often ironic use of classical music. His main movies are Eyes Wide Shut, The Shining (Shining), 2001 : A Space Odyssey (2001 : L'Odyssée de l'Espace) .

Angels & Airwaves' to release new album, film for free
While Blink 182 is currently getting the most press, Tom Delong is still planning significant releases with his project, Angels and Airwaves. Tom discusses his upcoming album and film, Love with Billboard and notes that the album will be free, thanks to corporate underwriting:[Love] is the biggest release of my life, the pinnacle of my creativity. It's super conceptual and highbrow in many ways, very artistic, very Stanley Kubrick. But it's not a rock opera. It's a very modern version of what could happen when you blend the film industry and the music industry together in a very, very arty, kind of cool way with professionals involved all along the path.[The film] blurs the line between full-fledged live action and documentary with these epic kind of...meditative sequences where the sound [Read more]

Mirrors: A thriller with a story that doesn't thrill anymore
Mirrors is a horror film borrowing a number of obvious and traditional traits from other horror cinema, but still fails to deliver a plot line which fits in with the story. Yes, it is a thriller, so the ultimate truth to the big mystery of the plot is revealed at the end, but the script still seems a little premature for this gory horror film to be aimed at an adult audience. Yes, this is an R-rated movie, but not because it?s scary. Instead of instilling fear into the audience it gives us disgu [Read more]

The circle unbroken: a guide to the works of Loop
I?ll lay my cards on the table from the off here, Loop are one of my all time favourite bands. There I?ve said it. For what it?s worth, anyone expecting a levelheaded re-appraisal of the band's output should stop reading now. To me musically speaking Loop were close to perfection; live and on record. They split before their time and left a body of work that has more depth than most bands of their day, and it's perhaps now finally getting the respect it deserves.Over a five-year-lifespan they rel [Read more]

Inappropriate Cultural Flashbacks: The Sequel
I have blogged before about the unfortunate phenomenon of the Inappropriate Cultural Flashback while watching an old film ? for instance, the sudden distracting presence of someone who would later become massively famous for something else, usually on TV. It is a problem of casting and typecasting ? the stars of films may carry with them a kind of shimmer from previous, similar roles which bolster their plausibility and presence in the one you're watching; but if a bit-part player starts remindi [Read more]

Bookmark Fri. June 12, 11:59 p.m. 2001: A Space Odyssey at IFC Center Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 collaboration with Arthur C. Clarke, the dean of sci-fi realism, has a pace that makes Ridley Scott’s methodic Alien look like an 80-minute summer blockbuster. Roughly the first and last quarters of 2001 lack dialogue, and most of the long transitional shots that connect narrative expositions are in slow motion, zero gravity, or both. But for all the wailing and teeth-gnashing this wi [Read more]
