Serge Gainsbourg

Serge Gainsbourg Edit

Aka Lucien Ginsburg

(1928-1991, France)   |   |   |   |   |   |

( fr ) Serge Gainsbourg (April 2, 1928 - March 2, 1991) was a French poet, singer-songwriter, actor and director. Gainsbourg's varied style and individuality made him difficult to categorize. Although famous in France for many years, he did not achieve his first No. 1 album until 1979 when he released Aux Armes et caetera more than twenty years after his music career had begun. But since the 1980s his legacy has been firmly established.

Serge Gainsbourg as sampled by The Beatnuts
The Light in the Attic reissue of Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson has garnered some heady praise, including a 10.0 and Best New (Old?) Music status from Pitchfork. I don’t claim to be at all familiar with Gainsbourg’s work, but when I listened to the album, the opening bass line to the first song, En [...] [Read more]

The Kills Wreak Havoc at Our Office
“I had no idea what we were going to do with all of this stuff,” confesses Mosshart, the lead vocalist for lo-fi rock's answer to Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, whose love for painting and photography was passed down from her art-teacher mother. “Skulls represent rock,” says Hince, the mock-snarl on his face summoning a young Alice Cooper. “It's so cliché but true. When you go to a bar in a different country, just go to the one with the skulls on it.” The w [Read more]

Go mad for Fujiya & Miyagi
The trio - David Best (guitars and vocals), Steve Lewis (synths, beats, programming), and Matt Hainsby (bass) - commendably stay away from lyrical themes that have been done to death. Using old synths to punctuate their beautifully-observed anecdotes on romantic triumphs and disasters, heroes and villains and the world at large, their rhythms palpitate to produce modern symphonies like no-one else. Soan | A Nouvelle Star Is Born
Tonight, all of France will be tuned into M6 for the final round of “Nouvelle Star,” the Gallic version of “American Idol” that?s captured the hearts not only of the French public but also of the fashion press. French television is already infamous for high-concept game shows and indefatigable talking heads, and fittingly les françaises have taken to “Nouvelle Star” like flies to blue cheese. But Soan, one of the two finalists tonight, is nothing short of a ph [Read more]

ICC prosecutor wins the argument
The peace versus justice issue is at the heart of my conversation with Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the Argentine lawyer who in the summer of 2003 became the first ever prosecutor of the world's first ever permanent international criminal court. Over the past six years he has led investigations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and other parts of the world, to a mixed reception. In 2005 the UN security council sent him the poisoned chalice that is Sudan, which he has pursued with vigour, cu [Read more]

Gwyn Topham guardian.co.uk, Sunday 24 May 2009 13.30 BST You ask kids today what they want to do, complains Clive James, and they just say they want to be famous. Not for being good at anything ? Byron was a celebrity who deserved it, he says ? just to be famous. It's a familiar refrain, and one with a certain poignancy from James, who seems to be wanted to be remembered as more of a literary figure than simply as the famous Clive James, who a large crowd have come to see at Hay. Iggy Jazz/Blues
The controversial French author's 2005 novel -- which loosely inspired the 62-year-old punk icon's new song cycle -- is about death, sex, the end of the human race and some other pretty funny stuff, quips Iggy in a media release. More specifically, it chronicles the final years of a provocative, cynical and misanthropic entertainer and libertine named Daniel, whose yearning for a more meaningful existence leads him to a Raelian-like cult where he (along with his loyal dog, Fox) eventually ach [Read more]

Britons set to scoop awards at Cannes
Already famous in France for a 2008 Playboy shoot in which she appeared naked in homage to the cover of Serge Gainsbourg's album Histoire de Melody Nelson, flame-haired Cole has impressed French film critics. Agnes Poirier, who writes for the Nouvel Observateur, said: It was astonishing to watch her. I'd known her only as a model and most models can't act, but Lily really can. She has a very unusual, almost old-fashioned and cinematic face - she might have a great career in front of her. She re [Read more]
