Waxman probe deficient: defence
To drive home his point, Greenspan noted some of the charges against Waxman allege he arranged deals in which Philip sold copper but was never paid for it. Those deals involve 960,000 pounds of the metal, and while the documents Coort examined don't include invoices or payment receipts for those amounts -- without which the accountant concluded there had been fraud -- documents he didn't examine show that amount of copper was sent to another company to satisfy a debt owed by Philip. Prequels and remakes and reboots, oh my!
Reboots - In the past few years, filmmakers have attempted to revitalize franchises by essentially starting them over. Rather than telling the story of events prior to the first installment in a series, or retelling a story just for the sake of doing so, previous entries in a storyline are ignored and treated as if they never happened. This allows the writers to work with established properties and put their own spin on the characters and events without concerning themselves with continuity issu [Read more]

Exotic adventures in the lap of luxury
For many years the British ruled a very big roost in these parts, but Singapore actually has its origins in ancient times. The island, located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, is said to have received its name from a visiting Sumatran prince in the 14th century, who saw a fearsome creature which he thought was a lion. Taking this so-called lion as a good omen, the prince founded a new city on the spot, changing the name of the island from Temasek to Singapura. In Sanskrit, singa mea [Read more]

Municipal band to hold concert June 11
The concert will open with a recent addition to the band's repertoire, Fred Jewell's High and Mighty march. It seems ironic to say this is new to our library when the work is nearly a hundred years old, said director Kevin Lines. However, many great works like this would be lost if it were not for the efforts of publishers who work so hard to preserve some of this great music from the early history of the modern concert band. The band's first overture of the evening is Morton Gould's most po [Read more]

LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, June 10, 2009
Right when some semblance of a compromise is reached on the Kent Avenue bike lane, the Fifth Avenue lane becomes a problem. Brownstoner and Streetsblog are reporting that the Fifth Avenue BID wants to do away with the bike lane that runs from Carroll Street to 24th Street, and Community Board 6 is listening. The BID argues that the bike lane makes it too difficult for trucks to make deliveries to the many businesses that line the avenue and that more tickets are getting issued as a result. [Read more]

Still not ready for the digital switch? Here's some help.
Make sure the converter box allows analog signals to reach the TV set. After the switch, all of the high-power TV stations will be broadcasting digital signals. But low-power stations such as KCWB (Channel 13), KBID (Channel 31) and KMCF (Channel 35) are not required to make the switch. Those local low-powered TV stations will eventually change to digital, but for now they will remain analog. So unless your converter box has the capability to receive both digital and analog, you may miss some st [Read more]

Performance Club: The Great Tunnel Tour
4 Comments For This Post Evan Says:June 9th, 2009 at 3:37 pm What a fabulous afternoon. I was surprised by the number of people willing to spend a few hours in a dark, cold tunnel on a sunny, 80-degree day, but who could pass up the opportunity to climb down a manhole in the middle of Atlantic Avenue? As you said, Claudia, that was definitely a highlight. And watching everyone awkwardly stumble as they entered the main part of the tunnel and get their bearings was rather entertaining, no? Our Favorite Summers: 1997
Our Favorite Summers: 1997by Eugene Novikov Jun 2nd 2009 // 9:20PMFiled under: Summer MoviesI was 13 years old in the summer of 1997. I don't know if it's my favorite movie summer, but I do know that it was seminal -- at least in the sense that it was the first summer when I made a concerted effort to keep up with Hollywood's weekly output and see as much of it as I could. Already, I was jotting down my thoughts on everything I saw, fancying myself a budding film critic. The following year, I [Read more]
