Aka Philip K Dick

(1928-1982, United States)   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |

( fr ) Philip Kindred Dick (1928 - 1982) was an American writer, mostly known for his works of science fiction; additional to forty-four books published, Dick wrote several short stories and minor works published in pulp magazines. At least seven of his stories have been cinematically adapted. Though hailed during his lifetime by peers such as Stanislaw Lem, Robert A. Heinlein, and Robert Silverberg, and despite being highly regarded in France, the writer received little public recognition in America, until after his death. Some of his book or stories were adapted (Blade Runner, Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly, Total Recall, Paycheck).

Pixels At An Exhibition
But regardless of where works stand on the call for change, each one fulfils the second function of the exhibit — namely, to tackle misperceptions about digital art’s viability as a medium for self-expression. “It doesn’t get a lot of respect, because I think people see a lot of bad Photoshop,” says Cho, who argues all good art must abide by the same rules of composition, colour theory, and design. That’s why, in a bid to help viewers appreciate digital art as [Read more]

Night Of The Creeps
Another weekend with nothing to do? Here are some suggestions:FRIDAY1. The Republic Of Texas Biker Rally will chew up and spit out downtown through Sunday, so most of our recommendations this weekend come with the caveat, Yeah, but you'll have to wade through a bunch of bikers. This would have been truest of David Allan Coe's show at Emo's, but it now appears the legendary country outlaw has cancelled due to illness. But if you're still interested in getting that biker rally ambience withou [Read more]

Miller makes you cry, makes you laugh
In his newest solo release, singer/songwriter and Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller sticks with a winning formula -- write catchy, apparently happy music and pair it with unsettling lyrics. My approach to songwriting has always been to take a heavy subject and put it to a bouncy tune, Miller said. This record takes that trick to the next level. It's still a fun record to listen to. It's a fine line you gotta walk, you know? he added. The eponymous Rhett Miller, released Tuesday on Shout! Factory [Read more]

Get Away From It All By Traveling The Multiverse
Earth 0 is the core Earth, the one that all regular stories take place on and - more importantly for the purposes of this post - the one that was the basis for the 51 alternate Earths that are known to exist within DC's current multiverse. Of those 51, the following have been identified:Earth-1 is, essentially, the Earth that most comic fans grew up reading about - Think of it as Earth Super Friends.Earth-2 is an Earth that missed out on all of the Silver Age of comics, so there's no Hal J [Read more]

Google Squared: The perfect search tool if you like inaccurate
Other writers have already complained about the weirdness of some results. My favorite search so far is for “newspapers.” As expected, given the broadness of the search, Squared returned a rather random collection of publications. More inexplicable, however, were the fields of information it provided: In addition to offering each paper's image and description, Squared also provided their “Justice,” “Pakistan,” and “Games.” (It turns out that The Mo [Read more]

Secret Titles, Existential Borders, and Let's Not Go
I'm interested in the growing tendencies of multiculturalism inEastern Europe. There are some fascinating issues like the growing, butstill tiny, group of Poles of African heritage. There's always been theidea of, if not quite homogeneity, then the idea of hermeticism ofculture. It was always a crass and ideological model, but it's notstrictly a lie. It's like racism. Racism is bullshit, but it's verystrong as a social logic, unfortunately. The projected monoculture is avery powerful piece of id [Read more]

Tom Wallace, Star Tribune
Where to start with Philip K. Dick? He wrote science fiction steeped in politics, metaphysics and parallel universes -- with a healthy dose of paranoia. He was deeply influenced by the early death of his twin sister, by his use of drugs and by theological experiences. But that's nothing compared with the life-transforming visions he said he experienced in 1974. That led him to believe he was living a dual life as Philip K. Dick and as Thomas, the first-century apostle. Once, he was convinced th [Read more]
