Rivera exhibit explores his cubist portraits
The exhibit also showcases works from friends of Rivera along with commentary on them from Rivera's autobiography. Rivera, who came somewhat late to cubism, said that from the beginning, he accepted Pablo Picasso's mastery. I readily proclaimed myself Picasso's disciple, he wrote. I have always been proud that Picasso was not only my teacher, but my very dear and close friend. [Read more]

Art Auction: No Guarantees
Art Auction: No Guaranteesby Tom Johansmeyer Jun 18th 2009 at 4:01PMNobody can find a trace of the good vibes from the May contemporary art auction at Christie's. London art sales are off an estimated 70 percent this month from a year ago. The amount of top-shelf lots being offered has fallen precipitously. Auction house price guarantees are little more than a quaint novelty – this last bit spells continued heartache for the beleaguered art market. So, if you're looking for Pablo Picasso, [Read more]

Vanished Smile
Scotti, who has written previous books on the construction of St. Peter?s Basilica and the Great Hurricane of 1938, specializes in popular history and tells this fascinating story very well. Unfortunately, her writing is occasionally so overbearing and florid as to evoke shudders. For example: ?Night like liquid velvet settled over the mansard roofs, innocent if a night is ever innocent.  A night is young but never innocent, and as Sunday merged with Monday and the city awakened to a new day, th [Read more]
