( fr ) Oldboy (Hangul) is a 2003 South Korean film directed by Park Chan-wook based on a Japanese manga of the same name, written by Minegishi Nobuaki and Tsuchiya Garon. While the film can be described as a psychological thriller, along with many elements of film noir to examine the nature of sin and morality, it is ultimately a Greek tragedy. The bare outlines of the plot are reminiscent of The Count of Monte Cristo (the director himself makes the homage explicit at one point), but the movie diverges very freely from its source. It is the second installment of Park's 'vengeance trilogy', following Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and followed by Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.

Must Watch: Red Band Trailer for Park Chan-wook's Thirst
Focus Features has debuted the official US trailer for Park Chan-wook's Thirst over on IGN today. If you can't stand the sight of blood - especially if someone is drinking it - then I don't suggest watching this. It's a red band trailer meaning they don't hold back, especially on the grotesque stuff that Park Chan-wook has put into this. The film has already been scheduled for a limited release starting on July 31st. Hardcore cinephiles should be familiar with Park Chan-wook, the Korean director who brought us the incredible Vengeance trilogy, including Oldboy. This time, it's a story about a vampire, but it's still as twisted as ever.I had the chance to see Thirst when I was in Cannes and gave it 7 stars in my review. Cannes 2009 Review: Park Chan-wook's Thirst
Let's make it clear that before I start this, I am indeed a fan of Park Chan-wook and his past films, specifically the Vengeance trilogy. For his latest film, Chan-wook has decided to explore the vampire genre, or at least explore the idea of vampirism. And considering it is Chan-wook, that means we're going to see something much crazier than we would otherwise ever expect, and that is indeed the case with Thirst. Officially, it was the third film I watched here at Cannes, and besides Pixar's Up, it's the best live-action film I've seen so far (that also includes Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro, which was only okay).Thirst is no Oldboy, nor is it Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - no, it's not that great, but it's still good.
