Nirvana

Nirvana Edit

(1987-1994, United States)   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |

( fr ) Nirvana was an American rock band that was formed by singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in 1987 with drummer Dave Grohl joining the band in 1990. With the lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from the band's second album Nevermind (1991), Nirvana entered into the mainstream, bringing along with it a subgenre of alternative rock called grunge. Other Seattle grunge bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden also gained popularity, and as a result, alternative rock became a dominant genre on radio and music television in the United States during the early-to-mid-1990s. Nirvana's brief run ended with Cobain's death in April 1994.

First Look: Harlem Shakes - “Technicolor Health”
The recent anniversary of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s death was a reminder not just of a brilliant talent snuffed out too soon, but of the short shelf-life of rock movements. Grunge was quickly co-opted and Xeroxed into submission in the early ’90s, and alternative — whatever that means — stopped being an alternative to anything [...] [Read more]

The Canon, Examined: American Music Club - “Mercury”
American Music Club’s Mark Eitzel performs at Largo on Saturday. What follows is the second in my two-part look at the band’s ’90s heyday. Part 1, on Everclear, is here. American Music Club’s follow-up to the lauded Everclear came in the wake of the grunge explosion. Mercury was recorded in 1992 as Nirvana and Pearl Jam [...] [Read more]

When Scales Fall
From a different aspect, however, the hiddenness of God is a wrenching reality, the result not of his essential ineffability but of the human inclination to sweep him under the rug. The so-called Enlightenment encapsulates that very tendency. From the violent soil of a Voltaire, hoping to see the last king strangled with the entrails of the last priest, there sprouted the deceptively gentler tendrils of indifference and forgetfulness. Our beloved America (not to mention dying Europe) is today sn [Read more]

300 000 Stray Dogs Roam the Streets of Bangkok
For every square kilometre of land in Bangkok, there are 200 stray dogs. With so many strays in Bangkok, living conditions in the city are beginning to be effected. These strays, who bare a distinct similarity to India's Pariah dog, cause car accidents, steal food and when they die decompose in the streets. The human population of the city is 95% Buddhist and a very influential portion of the population are the monks who guide them on their quest to reach Nirvana. Debt. It's Better Than Chains.
And all this is made possible just by downsizing and outsourcing our jobs in order that the Masters can take an even bigger share of the wealth created by labor.  But what happens when the Chinese laborers demand a little bitty bit of a raise to live just a tad above subsistence?  Where will the Masters find cheaper labor than in China?  Soon goods will have to be made by robots and specially-trained chimps.  But the Masters will still have to pay someone to do the maintenance on the robots and [Read more]

Don't get your hopes up; Brixx isn't pizza
Along with the pies, the menu includes sandwiches and wraps. But my carbohydrate of choice here is pasta. There's a short list -- salmon with lemon-thyme butter and penne, pomodoro with angel hair -- and I'd come back to try them because I really enjoyed the shrimp carbonara. It's not true carbonara, a sauce that's traditionally based on eggs instead of cream, but this interpretation is pleasant enough, thick with cream and tangles of sun-dried tomatoes and prosciutto, the shrimp plentiful and c [Read more]

What seems to be a perfect idea ? poutine! poutine! poutine
Anyone seen Linda lately? Once the toast of Thai-town, offering a dazzling alternative to gloopy, Day-Glo noodles, she was a shining beacon of spice-radiating light in a culinary wasteland too often associated with take-out Styrofoam cartons. From her perch above Salad King on the campus of Ryerson University, she seductively beckoned with exquisite, French-inflected Thai cuisine. We were captivated by her signature 15-point spice range (order 15 and they were said to call 911 just in case) ? a [Read more]
