Dispatch from pedicab nation, featuring
Ever since I penned a story about Steve Meyer, the guy behind the local rickshaw companies Main Street Pedicabs and Mile High Pedicabs, not to mention one of the leading pedicab gurus anywhere, he's been sending irregular updates on the state of his three-wheeled, pedal-powered industry -- and a recent correspondence I received from him highlighted a couple big developments.Meyer reports that New York City is considering regulation for its 1,000 pedicabs. The move's apparently backed by local pe [Read more]

Tiny Masters of Today - Skeletons
A sibling duo out of New York City, Tiny Masters of Today broke onto the indie music scene in 2005 on Myspace, making quick fans of musical notables like Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and David Bowie. Composed of 13-year-old Ada and 15-year-old Ivan, Tiny Masters write short ditties about… well, not about much. The nonsensical, repetitive lyrics and unpolished instrumentals grate on the ear. But when compared to the bubblegum pop teen acts ruling the charts, Tiny Masters of Today have something [Read more]

No 'Curb' appeal
Which leads to more nights. And sightseeing tours of New York City. And someone new to hear his venomous — and sometimes funny — denunciations of contemporary urban life. The fact that she's a simple-hearted, undereducated former baton twirler from a born-again Southern family only gives him more juice for his bilious rhetoric. [Read more]

New York City's innovative new park, the High Line, is finally
The Huntington was another great haunt (at least the now removed Ship Room) and on summer evenings we could open our windows and hear the music.  It was divine.  A few years ago our son and his family spent the holidays with us and wanted to show his daughters where he grew up, see the Rose Parade, and have brunch in the hotel.  I hadn't been in the hotel for years and had those you can't go home again thoughts.  When we entered the lobby an entire marching band was there waiting for the bus th [Read more]

Extreme Left Calling People to Arms
But it gets a little more creepy when you look at this: One of those leaders arrested in France Julien Coupat was held for six months and just released this May. According to a story in The Globe and Mail back in January of 2008 while visiting Canada, Coupat and his girlfriend sneaked over the border to visit New York City. According to relatives, they didn't want their photos and fingerprints in the hands of U.S. authorities. Why is that? (By the way are our borders protected yet?) [Read more]

Will Kim Raver return to 24 since ABC didn't pick up her new show? — BrightEyezMATT: I see where you're going with this. Since Season 8 is set in New York City, you're hoping Jack and Audrey will rendezvous, Sleepless in Seattle-style, atop the Empire State Building. Well, put a pin in that dream for now. For starters, you should be with me in wanting Jack with Renee, not Audrey. Beyond that, ABC's Inside the Box pilot is undergoing retooling/technically still in play, so Raver might not e [Read more]

On Stonewall Anniversary, Appreciating History Already Made
But while activists are right to press Obama on pledges not yet fulfilled, the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots offers a moment to reflect on the history that has already been made. Just think: Forty years after outcast gay men and drag kings and queens confronted abusive New York City police officers, leaders of the gay rights movement were welcomed to the White House by a presidential administration with a record number of openly gay appointees. Nearly 17 years after then-Arkansas Gov. [Read more]

The Beaches of Agnes A film review by Chris Cabin - Copyright © 2009 Filmcritic.com Agn?Varda was 34 when her first major work, Cleo from 5 to 7, hit the Cannes Film Festival and, later that year, New York City.
