( fr ) Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 c. April 5, 1994) was the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of the Seattle-based rock band Nirvana. He served not only as the band's frontman and principal songwriter, but also as its 'leader and spiritual center.' With the band's success, Cobain became a major national and international celebrity, an uncomfortable position for a man who once said, 'Famous is the last thing I wanted to be.'

Nirvana's Reading Festival gig to be released on DVD
According to an NME report, Nirvana's famous 1992 performance at the Reading Festival is set for release on DVD. Titled Life Takes No Prisoners, the show features 27 songs including covers of Boston's 'More Than A Feeling', Fang's 'The Money Will Roll Right In' and 'The Star Spangled Banner'. The show was notorious due to Kurt Cobain coming onstage in a wheelchair and wearing a white hospital robe for the duration of the performance.Interestingly, the release is due out as a bootleg in May but a remastered, restored version of the performance will be released via Universal Music, but not till November. Pissy Pumpkins Unplug On Chris Isaak Hour
Last night's Chris Isaak Hour featured Billy Corgan and his now departed bandmate Jimmy Chamberlin in a predictably petulant Q&A intercut with sweet acoustic performances to remind us why we still care about the Smashing Pumpkins. Along with their touring musicians, Chamberlin and a harmonica-playing Corgan were joined by horns and violin on four post-Zeitgeist tracks plus an Issak-assisted cover [Read more]

U2 in Barcelona: Bono's touching dedication to Jackson
For all the media overload engendered by Jackson's demise, in Glastonbury, I am reliably informed, the news was greeted mainly with a kind of “damp indifference”. TV crews combed the site to film revellers saying how shocked they were, while bands hastily rehearsed Jackson cover versions, but evidently no one was about to let it crimp their celebrations. It was probably the wrong place for film crews to seek reactions, because, although Jackson was a musician, he existed in an entire [Read more]

Busker bylaw music to some
It?s just after 11 p.m. on a summer Friday night and Milo is just getting warmed up. He and busking partner Benny have amassed a fair bit of loonies and toonies in their guitar case so far. Just out front of the former Players Chop House and Lounge on Victoria Street in downtown Kamloops, the duo has set up a jam as countless evening revelers walk by. It?s an opportunity for the two to make some money and do something they love ? play music. ?All my good friends come from this guitar,? Milo sa [Read more]

Montreal book could be first after Jackson's death
During the last weeks and months of his life, Jackson made desperate attempts to prepare for the concert series scheduled for next month ? a series that would have earned millions for the singer and his entourage, but which he could never have completed, not mentally, and not physically, Halperin wrote in the tabloid, while claiming to have spent more than five years in the late performer's camp. Are we over-doing Jackson's death?
Was he as famous as the Duke of Wellington? There has been some debate about how much time a show like Channel 4 News should devote to a story like the death of Michael Jackson. Both in the newsroom and, I imagine, among our viewers too. Is it really “our” kind of story? Is it really a lead story - night after night? Can it possibly be right that we currently have a bigger team in LA than we had in Tehran for the election? (But do remember you don't need to get visas from a repressive [Read more]

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow - Ten Glam Bands You May Have Forgotten
Advert Only a handful of bands survived the switch from eighties spandex and long hair to the rebellion of grunge led by Kurt Cobain. The likes of Motley Crüe and Poison are still in the news, not because of the quality of their music, but as a result of sex video scandals, reality TV shows, and a certain lead singer running into a set piece on the Tonys. The bands left behind were quickly forgotten or never were quite that popular to begin with. Matthew Bell: The IoS Diary
Did Michael Jackson know he was going to die soon? A new biography out this week claims the superstar had been suffering from a rare lung condition, and that he needed a lung transplant but was too weak for it. Ian Halperin, an investigative journalist who has written several books including Who Killed Kurt Cobain?, says Jackson suffered from Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency, a disorder that depletes the protein that protects the liver and lungs. A spokesman for Jackson has dismissed the claim, [Read more]

Michael Jackson-did his unrivaled fame cause his death?
For some reason, fans don't seem to be able to enjoy the talents of actors or singers or sports stars without vaulting them to super human status and wanting more, alway wanting more.  How much are we, the public to blame for creating the isolation that must exist for anyone facing that much scrutiny. Paparazzi wouldn't be camping out in front of celebrity homes or hanging in trees in their back yards if we didn't crave those photos.
