John Lennon

John Lennon Edit

Aka John Winston Ono Lennon

(1940-1980, United Kingdom)   |   |   |   |   |   |   |

( fr ) John Lennon was a 20th-century English songwriter, singer and instrumentalist who gained worldwide fame as one of the founders of the Beatles. Lennon and Paul McCartney formed a critically acclaimed and commercially successful partnership writing songs for the Beatles and other artists. Lennon, with his cynical edge and knack for introspection, and McCartney, with his storytelling optimism and gift for melody, complemented one another uniquely. In his solo career, Lennon wrote and recorded songs such as 'Imagine' and 'Give Peace a Chance'. Lennon revealed his rebellious nature and irreverent wit on television, in films such as A Hard Day's Night (1964), in books such as In His Own Write, and in press conferences and interviews. He channeled his fame and penchant for controversy into his work as a peace activist, artist, and author. He said (in 1966): 'We're more popular than Jesus now.'

Filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky Returning With 'King Shot'
If you're familiar with the work of Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky (Fando y Lis, El Topo, The Holy Mountain), you might wonder how he'd fit in with modern cinema. He's something of a relic, from a great time when someone like Luis Bunuel could regularly garner Oscar nominations, and when former Beatles (and their wives) had their hands in producing art films. Today, however, John Lennon is no longer around to champion Jodorowsky, and the shocking surrealist has lost his placement in between Bunuel and Pier Paolo Pasolini in terms of contemporary relevance. Now he's set to make his triumphant return.Nearly 20 years after his last film (The Rainbow Thief with Peter O'Toole), Jodorowsky will return to filmmaking with the metaphysical spaghetti western King Shot. And, he's managed to f [Read more]

Vinyl Cave: Illuminations by Buffy Sainte-Marie
In her online biography, Sainte-Marie maintains the reason she largely disappeared as a performer from the mainstream of American music in the late '60s was due to a blacklist begun during the Johnson administration. It's an idea that makes some sense, considering stories that have come out in recent years of other controversial subjects like John Lennon being under surveillance during the Nixon years. However, a couple of Sainte-Marie's early '70s albums did make the lower reaches of the char [Read more]

Game On 50 Cent Beef: 'I Did A Lot Of Dumb Things'
Jimmy always says, 'Man, I told you guys not to break up the Beatles,' Game said. He says he told John Lennon the same thing a long time ago. But I was young, man. I was dumb. I did a lot of dumb things. I felt me and 50 clashed. I'm not gonna dis 50. I'm not gonna go back on the plane. He had his side, I had my side. I did what I felt was necessary for me and my career to have longevity and survive in hip-hop and music to be around when I'm Quincy Jones' age — not just be Quincy Jones [Read more]

In memoriam
Blogs brim over with messages from Turkey to Romania, Russia to Poland, Bagdhad to Pakistan. And make no mistake, this is not blind adoration from a generation without heroes. This is the generation that fell in love with the Beatles, imagined with John Lennon, marvelled at Bruce Lee, idolised JFK, was mesmerised by Star Wars and boom-boomed with Boris Becker. And yet, there was a connection when the young, soft-spoken Michael Jackson blazed a trail at the Grammy Awards in the 1980s, making the [Read more]

Poster children for the fickleness of fame – and youthMichael SimkinsLast Updated: June 28. 2009 8:36PM UAE / June 28. 2009 4:36PM GMTIt was John Lennon who observed that “life is what happened while you’re busy making other plans”. Not only life, it seems, but death as well – in Lennon’s case at the hands of a crazed gunman while he was returning home after a night out.On almost any other week the death of actress and pin-up, Farrah Fawcett, would have been enough to make headline news the worl [Read more]

A little bit Elvis,Howard Hughes & a werewolf
I don't mean to be callous with Jackson's death or compare him with John Lennon but I believe Jackson's best stuff was behind him. More like Elvis than Lennon, Jackson, most likely, had a hand in his own demise. While I had issues with Lennon's later music, most specifically involving Yoko too much on his albums (there's dating myself, who am I, Marconi? I still speak in terms of albums or records), I believe his last musical output was pretty good and relevant. Michael Jackson peaked many years [Read more]

Washington Times-Herald, Ind., Today a New Day Column: Can We
By Nate Smith, Washington Times-Herald, Ind. Jun. 27--Remember when Elvis died? Remember when John Lennon died? That is what I was hearing Thursday around the sudden death of Michael Jackson, 50, at his home in Los Angeles. The scene of people surrounding the UCLA hospital where Jackson died was astounding. The wave of shock for everyone that he was gone was probably much what people had experienced when Elvis or Lennon died. I wasn't born when Elvis died and really close to 2 when Lenno [Read more]

Should Anyone Look At A Michael Jackson Autopsy Photo?
Written by Rick Ellis   Saturday, 27 June 2009 01:33    Should Anyone Look At A Michael Jackson Autopsy Photo?News - LatestThe absolute prize celebrity photo for any tabloid is a picture of a dead superstar. When Elvis died, a photo of him in his coffin was sold to the National Enquirer for a reported seven figures. A blurry photo of John Lennon's body on a stretcher fetched a similar amount after his death. So it's not surprising that several photos of a dead or dying Michael J [Read more]

Fans mourn their idol
I thought it was funny when I'd hear my mum talking about when John Lennon died, or people about when Kurt Cobain died, but when I saw those words on that screen my eyes started to water, you feel silly 'cos you don't know that person, but it was a part of my life, and everyone's life, growing up. Molly Meldrum Talks MJ
Hearing about Michael Jackson?s sudden death catapulted Aussie music guru Molly Meldrum back to the day John Lennon was killed. John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band: live in Toronto '69
If you respect Lennon's music, you'll enjoy this DVD.  It shows him starting to break out of the Beatles style and find his own voice.  However, he also doesn't seem as together and polished as when he was with the Beatles - also, he seems so deadly serious.  His songs definitely have taken a more political slant by this stage, but where's the wry humor that so defined the driving force behind the most popular rock band in history?  If you truly love Lennon's music, you'll appreciate this DVD.  [Read more]

Missing the longest day of the year--our fleeting literary summers

June 21st is the Summer Solstice and I wish I had marked the day with some sort of reminder that life is what John Lennon said the things we do between what we are planning to do. Or as a poet once put it the way we miss our life is our life. Sad but true. And now we must grabs these summer days before the shortening twilight comes down on our summer hiatus.I [Read more]

John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band: Live in Toronto '69 (DVD)
Connect to Facebook/Twitter, recommend via email and much more. I´m sure I don´t have to explain who John Lennon was or how he was a member of one of the greatest and most successful rock bands of all-time, the Beatles. Nothing lasts forever though and the group eventually went their separate ways. Still, their impact on pop culture can still be felt today despite being thirty years removed from the height of Beatle-mania. The Simpsons have made numerous references to the group and thei [Read more]

The first concert of John Lennon's solo career
Set over a hambone beat, her Don't Worry Kyoko (Mummy's Only Looking For Her Hand In The Snow) is the primal source of Siouxsie and the Banshees over a decade before their heyday. At four minutes, this song holds the attention of most of the audience, but she certainly loses them with John, John (Let's Hope For Peace) - nine minutes of her over a wall of feedback set up by Lennon, Clapton, and Voorman simply leaving their guitars standing against their turned-to-the max amplifiers [Read more]
