Known for his vocal range, Buckley was considered by critics to be one of the most promising artists of his generation after the release of his 1994 debut album Grace. Steve Carson's Outdoors: Japan bass could be a record
If initial reports hold up, a massive 22-pound, 5-ounce Florida-strain largemouth from Japan's Lake Biwa this week will tie the currently listed 22-4 caught way back in 1932 in Georgia's Lake Montgomery. Stories about big fish from half a world away should always be taken with a grain of salt. However, credible sources including BassFan.com, the San Diego Union-Tribune, and BASSmaster are giving the report legitimate treatment pending further review. According to International Game Fish Associat [Read more]

Genre Bending Indian Blues
Najma Akhtar & Gary Lucas  Rishte (World Village, 2009)  It’s not every day I get to listen to an American blues-Indian Classical music fusion recording. I have heard my share of jazz Indian fusion recordings, but “Rishte” by classical Indian vocalist Najma Akhtar and American guitarist Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley) happens to be a first for my ears. And it has taken a few listens before the music actually sunk in.  First I would like to say that I was impressed [Read more]

Triple J's Hottest 100 Of All Time
It's a tough task narrowing every piece of music you've ever heard into a top 10, possibly more so if you make a living listening to music. This was difficult - agonising even. I feel like I'm offending so many bands I've loved for years by leaving them out - humble apologies to Ween, Jeff Buckley, Bob Dylan, Soundgarden, Mr Bungle, Pink Floyd, Muse, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens Of The Stone Age, Gomez and The Flaming Lips. I also feel really bad about not having [Read more]

CD - The Temper Trap
The first single from Melbourne four piece The Temper Trap's debut album Conditions is the kind of heavenly pop hit that can shift both moods and iPods. Nearly a year after it was first released, Sweet Disposition is still brilliantly fresh, as infectious, breathless and timeless as The Smiths' Ask, or Madonna at her prime. With a refrain of ”a moment, a love, a dream aloud, a kiss, a cry, our rights, our wrongs”, it's ripe for claiming as a G Day anthem, and it's also nowhere near t [Read more]

Can we take the politics out of SF budget
Here is a perfect example of the imperfect budget debate at work. The SRO (single room occupancy) collaboratives advocate for poor tenants in cheap residential units in the Mission District, Chinatown, and Tenderloin. They do good work, but critics argue the collaboratives are also powerful organizing arms for the campaigns of the city's more liberal politicians, like Chiu. [Read more]
