Yves Klein Blue sing About the Future
WHAT this generation needs is a war, Michael Tomlinson croons on a song called About The Future. It's not so shocking as it reads in print, as he goes on to sing about the ills and dilemmas facing his generation – he's 22 – part-serious, part-mocking.Those ills, it turns out, aren't so very different from the problems every generation of youth faces: Where do we fit in this big world, how can we best make use of our allotted time in it, why the hell are we so apathetic in the face o [Read more]

Gypsy-jazz from Halifax plays JazzFest
Ross Burns is one of those guys that will make you feel a bit inadequate. Aside from being a guitarist in the Halifax-based seven-piece gypsy jazz band Gypsophilia, he also performs and travels with a capoeira group. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that mixes martial arts and dance into what looks like half break-dancing, half actual fighting. ?That?s sort of the other side of me,? said Burns from the phone in Halifax, having just returned from a capoeira festival over the weekend in Ott [Read more]

Paul MacInnes The Guardian, Friday 19 June 2009 Zut. This week's topic inspired accusations of racism and collaboration. It sparked rows over the music of murderers and the application of ethics to personal taste. What could, quite easily, have been a genial foray into a world of smoky chanson and misappropriated foreign phrases turned into heated debate and an awe-inspiringly broad trawl through music as new to many of you as it was to me. Despite their name and impenetrable press release, this east
Even the band can't quite get a handle on what it is they're up to. Basically, their press release, which they penned themselves, is gibberish: The triple distilled essence (and sensibility) of an artistic huddle of mischievous musicals, is how they describe themselves, going on to extol the virtues of their songs, those rollicking along sing-a-longs, galloping into disco sunsets like whisky-addled and leather-saddled bandits on the stolen backs of prairie wild mustangs. Yes, well, cheers fo [Read more]

Austin group offers a Texas-sound to jazz
Kouyate defined it all for us. Those bird cages were his talking drums, which Kouyate demonstrated in a quick solo-jam clinic before the rest of the guys arrived. He held the drum under his arm, squeezing it against his side to tighten or loosen the strings that run the circumference of the instrument. They're attached to the goatskin drumhead, which he beat with both hands, one holding a hooked ivory stick. As the strings tightened, the pitch of the drum changed, giving him a wide range of soun [Read more]

ROCHESTER JAZZ FESTIVAL 2009 BLOG: Day 4: Stephane Wrembel, Chico
When the Stephane Wrembel Trio hit the stage at the new, large Club Pass tent, I thought there might be a sound system problem - an electronic buzz that just wouldn't quit. My son suggested that it might be there on purpose and, sure enough, it was a drone that gave a vaguely Middle-Eastern tinge to the first song. With all of its international acts, one thing the RIJF has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt is that jazz has expanded into myriad sub-genres. Wrembel is a proponent of the Django dgen [Read more]

Singer-songwriter-producer Allen Toussaint will be in the spotlight this Friday night in St. Paul's Mears Park as part of the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. But the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer has spent much of his six-decade career as a songwriter — and hit-making producer — shying away from the spotlight. Yes, definitely, my whole forte has been in the studio writing, arranging horns and strings and rehearsing musicians for artists who go out and perform. I've always considered myself [Read more]
