David Fincher the Perfect Choice to Direct Movie About Similarly Charming Facebook Founder
Last night, new details emerged on The Social Network, next year's Scott Rudin–Aaron Sorkin movie on Facebook's founding. Most notably, that David Fincher is in advanced talks to direct — a choice which seems completely insane, sort of, until one considers that Fincher is a technical filmmaker whom nobody seems to like personally and Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg is a left-brained programmer who's nearly as charismatic. Also making this perfect: Network is based on Ben Mezrich's upcoming book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal (a fact that was previously alluded to in tweets, but not widely known until last night). The book's primary source, reportedly, is Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, with whom Zuckerberg [Read more]

Fincher's Facebook Movie is Actually Based on Ben Mezrich's New Book
When the news hit yesterday that David Fincher, of all people, was going to direct Aaron Sorkin's script about Facebook called The Social Network, most people flipped out. There's just no way a project about Facebook would be worthy of a director like Fincher. However, I just knew there was something more to it, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Thankfully my friend Peter from SlashFilm gave me a call to let me know that he discovered that Sorkin's script is actually based on a book called The Accidental Billionaires that was written by Ben Mezrich - the same guy who wrote the book that blackjack movie 21 was based on.Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook when he was studying at Harvard with his roommate Eduardo Saverin, but there's a much bigger story. Ben Mezrich, who wrote the book Bringin [Read more]

David Fincher Might Direct Aaron Sorkin's Facebook Movie?!
Whoa, wait just a minute, David Fincher doing a Facebook movie? This just can't be right, can it? So here's the backstory. Late last year it was announced that The West Wing and Charlie Wilson's War screenwriter Aaron Sorkin was working on a project about Facebook called The Social Network. The story will focus on the evolution of Facebook from its 2004 creation on the Harvard campus by sophomore Mark Zuckerberg to a juggernaut with more than 60 million members. Entertainment Weekly breaks the news that Oscar nominated director David Fincher is in early talks to direct this as his next movie. As I was writing this up, Variety also confirmed the news, meaning it's pretty much official and not just a rumor. The hope is to begin production later this year, they say. Scott Rudin and Michael De [Read more]

James Cameron Might Be Directing a Heavy Metal Segment?!
Whoa, now this is some awesome news! We've heard about that Heavy Metal movie that David Fincher is spearheading, but it keeps getting stuck in development hell. Well, our friends at Film School Rejects recently caught up with TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman and asked him if he had any updates. I've got breaking news that Fincher and James Cameron are going to be co-executive producers on the film. Fincher will direct one. Cameron will direct one. Zack Snyder is going to direct one and Gore Verbinski is going to. Mark Osborne and Jack Black from Tenacious D are going to do a comedy segment for the film.I wouldn't say this is completely confirmed news, because we've heard off and on that various directors would be directing segments, even though nothing has come together. At one point they ha [Read more]

First Look: David Fincher's Animated Version of The Goon
Last year during Comic-Con we announced that Eric Powell's cult comic The Goon was being adapted into an animated feature film by none other than David Fincher. Although I've never personally read the comic, it seems like a pretty damn good cult comic, and I'm very interested in seeing how the movie will turn out. Well thanks to Quint at Ain't It Cool News, we've finally got a first look at the fi [Read more]

'Accidental Billionaires' is deliberately careful
This is most obvious when you pick up on the fact that the narrative almost never depicts Zuckerberg alone, and is told primarily from the perspectives of three people who dealt with him during Facebook's early days--schoolmate and co-founder Eduardo Saverin, Silicon Valley entrepreneur and eventual Facebook exec Sean Parker, and ConnectU co-founder Tyler Winklevoss. Scenes relying heavily on Zuckerberg's own actions tend to be bolstered by actual e-mails or blog posts written by the young CEO. [Read more]

The book that Facebook doesn't want you to read
Mezrich remembers meeting Saverin by chance. It was about 2 a.m. in the morning when I got an email out of the blue to my web site, which is essentially a fan site. This kid wrote an email -- I'm a Harvard senior and I have a really fantastic story for you' -- which of course you hear all the time. But the kid said, 'You know, I've been best friends with these people who founded Facebook, and I want to tell you this story.' I wasn't looking for this story, but I went and met this kid for a drin [Read more]
