While his recent work as a director, on films like Million Dollar Baby and Letters from Iwo Jima, is consistently praised by critics, Eastwood is perhaps most famous for his tough guy, anti-hero acting roles, including Inspector 'Dirty' Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry series and the Man with No Name in Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns.

Jonathan Liebesman's Odysseus Ends Up at Warner Brothers
Good news for Jonathan Liebesman - his next project titled Odysseus will be a Warner Brothers feature. The studio won a bidding war over Paramount for the film, which features a script written by Liebesman's collaborator Ann Peacock. Odysseus is another retelling of the classic story about the legendary hero Odysseus, who returns to his island after 20 years of fighting the Trojan Wars, only to find his kingdom under the brutal occupation of an invading force. Odysseus single-handedly defeats every last man and takes back his wife, his son and his kingdom. 300 producer Gianni Nunnari is developing via Hollywood Gang.We were the first to reveal details on this back in January. At the time, Liebesman described it as a small taut kintetic action film in the same vein as a Clint Eastwood spagh [Read more]

Jun 28 2009 by Roz Laws, Sunday Mercury
New DVD releasesJun 28 2009by Roz Laws, Sunday MercurywGRAN TORINO (15) is a triumph for Clint Eastwood, who both directs and stars as the ultimate grumpy old man, Korean war veteran and widower Walt. His area is being taken over by south-east Asians and he's unashamedly racist towards them, until events lead to him bonding with his neighbours. With wonderful dialogue, delivered with relish, this is smart, funny and shocking.wCONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC (PG) is the adaptation of Sophie Kinsella' [Read more]

'Stars Turn Out for Guy's Choice' Awards
A surprising amount of A-listers were involved in the low grade Guys Choice awards Sunday on Spike. This was Clint Eastwood, Brad Pitt, Mel Gibson, Jamie Foxx as well as pepresentatives of the current comedy wave, Sasha Baron Cohen, Jonah Hill, Judd Apatow and such. There was still the stench of the bachelor pad in the third annual event, with talk of boobs and pukin' and balls. A plan for off-your-shelf summer reading
Only that wasn't his real name. Jerry Boyd was a longtime boxing cut man, working the corner of obscure boxers, who wrote on the side. He was pushing 70 when the book was first published in 2000, two years before his death. In 2004, Clint Eastwood turned one of the collection's stories into the film Million Dollar Baby, which starred Hilary Swank as a female boxer. I have opened the book to tuck a couple of newspaper clippings inside. One reads: As a storyteller, Toole is both sentimental a [Read more]

Ammo for his argument
You gotta have that faith, Vaughn said. Both eyes open allows us to read distance, direction and speed. Once we trust all that and believe it, it happens. Right now you're doubtin'. Right at the end you're trying to be sure. Let me teach you a life lesson. There's no such thing as perfect. If you try to be perfect you can't be excellent. 'Savannah, the mecca of Southern style cooking'
Upon checking in at the Hyatt Regency located on the bustling Savannah River, I cut right to the chase and asked our bell-person (it was a girl not a boy) to recommend the best eating-place in town. Gran Torino (R16)
Indeed, at times Eastwood's performance borders on caricature as Walt literally snarls and growls - and when he points a finger at menacing punks, you half expect him to say Make my day. But Walt's heart is in the right place - which leads him to come to the aid of two young neighbours being bullied by a local gang, inevitably leading to a climactic confrontation. [Read more]

American dreams and Israeli nightmares ? the latest out on DVD
His memory is at first blocked, but piece by piece, like a psychoanalytic puzzle, he reconstructs the history he lived through using the recollections of others, climaxing with the massacre of hundreds of unarmed Palestinians at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps by Christian Phalangists, to which the Israelis were passive observers. Folman's sense of place and detail are extraordinary as he fleshes out moments of fact and fantasy (a pack of angry dogs swarm toward the home of a war veteran wit [Read more]
