flyintiger   I appreciate Walter Salles for his inspired, personal movies (mostly the short film O primeiro Dia or Central do Brasil), rooted in a dramatic tension but where violence is rather suggested than explicit. Here, with Cidade de Deus, the style is very much in line with the universe of Soderbergh or Tarantino (don't you think that the character of Little Zé is a look-alike of Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction?). I liked this movie quite much though, with its favela-gang style and the character of the young photographer which makes this movie more interesting than just another gang story.

Appalachian Institution course to explore ideals of ethical life
This ideal offered not immortal fame but immortal life on a transformed earth, living eternally in the presence of God. It thus promised those who were motivated by faith, hope and charity that they would enter the kingdom of God, while all those strong and ferocious men who had previously been held up as models would be cast down, suffering not immortal fame but eternal damnation. The warrior was thus replaced by the martyr, the priest, the monk and the nun as exemplars of the good life. As a r [Read more]

¡Olé! A Week of Brazilian Cinema
If The Ballroom seems at first depressing and dark, that's only because it is honest. Because of the hand-held camera and brutal lighting, audiences see all the facial imperfections of the once-beautiful Brazilian movie stars. With its examination of humans' continuing battles against loneliness, the film places the harsh reality of aging front and center. One woman laments her loss of sexual allure in a pathetic but sympathetic way, while another hides at the dance hall to escape her husband an [Read more]

Movie review: Sin Nombre **1/2
In brief, Sin Nombre - without name in Spanish - tracks two parallel journeys that inevitably meet, brought together after a fatal encounter. The first, by far liveliest voyage begins in the chaos of Tapachula in Chiapas, Mexico, where Casper (Edgar Flores), a teenage member of the vicious street gang Mara Salvatrucha, is making a fast run toward an early grave. Casper meets his destiny when his story collides with that of Sayra (Paulina Gaitan), a solemn-eyed, none-too-sharp Honduran teenager [Read more]

Darkness visible
Though it has elements in common with the postapocalyptic genre - wherein a plotline can essentially be reduced to the virus that ate the world - Blindness is closer to allegory. Its origins are in a 1995 novel by the Portuguese Nobel-winning novelist, J?Saramago, in which the entire world, but for one woman, goes blind.Aware of how easily his concepts could be traduced into horror, Saramago resisted selling film rights for many years. However, Fernando Meirelles (City of God) has traced ou [Read more]

Chinese Calvinism flourishes
John Calvin was a Frenchman, but he is being remembered in Geneva this week because it was here that he built Calvinism. Invited to reform the city in 1541, almost as what would now be called a management consultant, he formed an alliance with the city fathers. Over the next 20 years of preaching and pastoring they turned this tiny city, with a population then of only 10,000, into a model of church government and theology which has changed the world. His followers now form the third-largest Chr [Read more]

Fjordman: Why Christians Accepted Greek Natural Philosophy, But
Fjordman: Why Christians Accepted Greek Natural Philosophy, But Muslims Did Not Brussels Journal 26 May 2009 By Fjordman My main thesis in this essay is that Christianity was a Greco-Roman religion in a way which Islam never was or could be. Islam was founded outside of the Greco-Roman world. Christianity was founded within this world, and gradually grew accustomed to Greco-Roman culture. This had a major long-term impact on how the adherents of these two religions treated the Greco-Roman [Read more]

KENYAN AUTHOR FIGHTS CORRUPTION MONSTER
It should be noted that a gift is not a bribe and what differentiates it from a corrupt practice is when the giver has no any motive to influence the mind or behavior of the recipient to act in a certain manner. In fact, what matters is the motive behind the so-called gift or handout. Anything given with some strings attached is no longer considered a gift but a bribe, Barasa explains. On Causes of Corruption, he says there are different types of corruption as there are different types and dime [Read more]
