Is dissing a free sample a food court faux pas?June 24th, 2009, 9:09 am · 9 Comments · posted by Niyaz PiraniI've been sick for the better part of five days and I spent my weekend holed up in my apartment switching between “Family Guy” and “Gilmore Girls” episodes.  I can justify the “Gilmore” marathon because it's on Time Mag's list of “The 100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME” (or at least I've convinced myself it's okay because of that).I finally start [Read more]

Straight for the art | Colleen Coover's Blandings Castle
I've linked to the blog Hey Oscar Wilde! It's clobberin' time!!! before, but it's one that's worth a look on a regular basis just to see what they've added since you were last there. The site collects portraits of famous authors by artists — like Brian Christopher drawing Chuck Palahniuk — and the occasional literary character portrait, as seen above, when Colleen Coover draws some of the folks from P.G. Wodehouse?s Blandings Castle. Go check it out. [Read more]

Dating technology instead of a person
My generation has become one of internet spies.  The second someone gets a number at the bar, they get on their iPhones and look them up in Facebook to make sure they always look that good.  They Google to see where they went to college, they check to see if they've been mentioned already on their Twitter profile, they look at their MySpace to make sure they're not into animal sacrifices.  It's amazing at the information you can find out before you've even been on a date.  But that's not a good [Read more]

Portland, Oregon-with your tour guide
Followers of this website no doubt can tell that I am an avid fan of Chuck Palahniuk.  Better known for his works in fiction, Palahniuk uses his method of giving the reader everything and more that they would require to get a descriptive look of Portland, and what it means to Palahniuk.  The book is written in several parts, all strung together by old journal entries from Palahniuk himself, starting from when he moved to Portland in 1980, leading to when he finished the book in 2002.  Each journ [Read more]

Review | 'Pygmy': Wreaking havoc with biotoxins
That's a shame, because Palahniuk is brilliant at juxtaposing Pygmy's insane background with the madness of contemporary Western society. From school dances to gym dodge ball, the novel mercilessly, sometimes with rote, joyless precision, takes the reader through the gamut of high school life while Pygmy works on activating Operation Havoc. Pleasures along the way include a model U.N. summit staged by the students that features some of the author's finest satire, with observations like this: ''O [Read more]

Pygmy, By Chuck Palahniuk
This is Chuck Palahniuk's 10th novel since the appearance of his ground-breaking debut, Fight Club, 13 years ago, and while he tackles many of the same themes here as he does in his previous work, Pygmy sees him radically branching out stylistically, with only partial success. The story is told by Agent 67, a highly trained secret operative from an unnamed totalitarian regime. Agent 67 is only 13 years old, but was taken from his family at the age of four to be brainwashed and turned into a vic [Read more]

Buy the DVD:
From the brilliant mind of Chuck Palahniuk, who also wrote the blockbuster hit, “Fight Club,” came the highly anticipated, though slightly disappointing, “Choke.”The film was constructed into a screenplay by Clark Gregg to bring the previously released novel to life. Produced by ATO Pictures in October of 2008, “Choke” is now available on DVD. The story follows the somewhat lowly and pathetic life of Victor Mancini (Sam Rockwell), who despite his drive to be a pessimistic, uncaring person, is a [Read more]

NOVEL APPROACH: Kill your master
Furthermore, Pygmy (aka agent number 67, who refers to himself as “Operative me”) is not angry or jaded like other Palahniuk headliners. Instead, he is alienated by his linguistics, which allows him to see American culture from an outside point of view. And so, driven by Pygmy’s clever and quick-witted observations, the plot leads the reader to see the hard reality of the dark side of American lifestyles in a humorous way. Palahniuk writes, “Magic quiet door go sideways, [Read more]
