Breaking Bad Edit

(2008, United States)   |   |   |   |   |   |   |

( fr ) Breaking Bad is an American television drama series created by Vince Gilligan. It chronicles the life of a terminal high school chemistry teacher who's suffering from the world's worst case of mid-life crisis and becomes a criminal. The AMC network, on which the series premiered January 20, 2008, originally ordered nine episodes for the first season (including the pilot), but the Writers Guild of America strike limited the production to seven episodes. Breaking Bad has been renewed for a second season consisting of 13 episodes. Principal filming for the second season of Breaking Bad began on July 15, with a tentative air date in 2009.

Breaking Bad’s Season Finale “ABQ” Gives Ridiculous New Meaning to the Words “Left Behind.” Body Bags, Secret Codes, and the Teddy Bear Discussed.
For Hunter's reviews/wrap-ups of the previous two episodes of Breaking Bad leading up to last Sunday's divisive finale, click here for ep 11 (Mandala) and here for ep 12 (Phoenix). Now that most everyone has caught up with the season finale of Breaking Bad, entitled ABQ, on their TiVo and what not, let's take a look at what went...down. Actually, for the sake of disclosure, the mini-delay of this write-up is also due to the episode being a surprising disappointment in my eyes. For a series that is deftly founded on madcap realism, the natural awes of science, and the odds of consequence, I found ABQ to stretch way beyond the show's established believability (and viewers' trust therein).Spoiler Alert from this point forward: While the ending to ABQ finally revealed the cause of the body bag [Read more]

Breaking Bad Finale: Walt’s in the Doghouse, Jesse’s in a Meth Den
Welcome to the Breaking Bad season-two finale! Quickly, let’s recap what happened last week, when we were off for Memorial Day (and meth overdoses were far from our minds). We learned that Walt actually did complete the $1.2 million drug deal with Gustavo, while also missing the birth of his daughter — whoops. Instead of immediately splitting the profits with Jesse, Walt decided to hold the money until Jesse got clean. Jane wasn’t into that plan, so she called Walt at his house and threatened to out him if he didn’t give them Jesse’s money, which Walt did, reluctantly. Meanwhile, Walt Jr. started a website soliciting donations to help pay for Walt’s surgery — Saul decided this was the perfect front for Walt’s drug money, so he helped create a [Read more]

Weeds Season 5 Trailer
Note: This post contains spoilers from the prior season. With the season finale of AMC’s crystal-meth drama, Breaking Bad, airing this Sunday, the season premiere of Showtime’s Weeds arrives right in time to [insert a tired pun for TV addiction]. Scheduled for June 8th, season five finds Mary Louise Parker’s drug-dealing California mom/widow, Nancy Botwin, pregnant with the child of Esteban (Che’s Demián Bichir). In keeping with Nancy’s breezy who-needs-a-plan-or-a-401K style, the baby was a surprise. That would be fine if Esteban, a mayor in Mexico, wasn’t a control-freak lording over an elaborate black market of cocaine, firearms and human traffic. Oh yeah, and Nancy and Esteban both know that [...] [Read more]

Breaking Bad: Episode “Phoenix,” Flynn’s Ugly Website, and Season 2 Finale Predictions

Today, we discuss “Phoenix,” the 12th episode [...] [Read more]

TV Buzz: AMC’s Breaking Bad Finally Crosses the Dark Side
Geez. Breaking Bad is breaking our innocent heart like the fourth grade. How about yours? With last Sunday’s episode, “Mandala,” the show tapped a pungent high too strong for /Film to ignore. Indeed, the latest ep in the best crystal meth drama outside of Wasilla, Alaska seemed to Ziploc the destinies of several main characters. Spoilers and tear drops ahead. If you’re a fan, please chime in below. If you’re not, what are you? A fan of Two and a Half Men? Do you know how much money that fat kid makes?!! Or, even worse, are you a fan of NBC’s Mark (competing time slot)? Before we really dive in though, let us raise the following observation: Perhaps what was most frightening about Sunday night’s ep is that this incredible AMC series is only in its second season. Breaking Bad: Back to the Lab Again
In the universe of Breaking Bad, there's really only one certainty: People aren't necessarily who you think they are. In last night's disturbing opening scene, Combo, one of Walt and Jesse's drug dealer lackeys, is confronted by two thugs in a car. A young boy on a bike approaches, and Combo warns him to leave the scene. Right when we think that the boy's going to get caught in drug-war crossfire, he instead takes out a gun and shoots Combo dead, upending our expectations entirely. It's a recurring theme throughout the episode.Walt and His FamilyWalt's doctor tells him of a risky surgery option; for about $200,000, Walt can have the shrunken tumor removed. Skylar balks at the cost and danger, but Walt says yes immediately, displaying his newfound ballsiness. Skylar, meanwhile, finds that h [Read more]

Hung, Pilot: Reviewing the debut
The second is that patience is going to be required here. Again, look at Breaking Bad as the model, and not just because both deal with high school teachers resorting to a life of crime to pay the bills. Hung is going to take its time getting Ray's career as a male prostitute(*) -- and Tanya's parallel career as a pimp -- off the ground. As Breaking Bad has shown (and as The Wire has, though I'm not yet prepared to set the bar remotely that high), series that show a little patience in de [Read more]

Verdict: 'Hung' doesn't deliver
Hung has a good deal in common with AMC's Breaking Bad, not to mention a host of other shows that dwell on the plight of middle-age men at sea in a changing society. And maybe you have to be a guy to fully appreciate either show. I often find Breaking Bad tedious and predictable, despite its terrific lead actor, Bryan Cranston, and I also found myself growing impatient with Ray.Here's a guy who is so tethered to his past that he refuses a reasonable offer on his decrepit house, despite hi [Read more]

Review: 'Hung' on HBO
Clearly the Obama administration needs to address the issue of teacher salaries and fast. On AMC's Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston is playing a science teacher making meth, and now we have Thomas Jane as Ray Drecker, a high school basketball coach turned male prostitute in HBO's Hung. Both are men of middle age who find themselves undone by fate -- Cranston's Walter White has cancer, Ray's wife has left him and he's lost his home to fire -- and a lack of ambition. Both are angry at a world that [Read more]

Lynda Hirsch on Soaps
Q: I just saw an ad for the TV show Breaking Bad. Did the star from that show ever appear on a soap? — Rowina, Gaithersburg, Md.A: He sure did. Bryan Cranston, who won a Best Actor Emmy last year for his role in Breaking Bad, spent a year on Loving. Douglas Marland, who created that soap with Agnes Nixon, saw the character of Douglas Donovan as a mirror of himself. At the time the soap debuted, Marland said he needed a good guy. Every soap needs a good guy. I think I am a pretty goo [Read more]

Breaking Bad: Season 2 Review
June 9, 2009 - My goodness. Look how far we've come. We started watching this show with a pretty simple, though hard to believe, premise. A teacher needed extra money to leave behind for his family in the event of his death. He cooked meth with his former student and by the end, he had earned the respect and business of Albuquerque's craziest drug dealer, Tuco, by blowing out the side of his office. Of course it sounds silly written out like that, but the source of Breaking Bad's power isn't it [Read more]
