Success of a black musician in White world
At that time, the reggae music of Bob Marley was fading away and booking itself forever a place in the realm of timeless classics. We are talking hits like Coming in from the cold, Jamming, Bad Card, No woman no cry, etc. But Marley didn?t get the attention he deserved. His wasn?t an easy act to copy as many young people are wont to do. There was a challenge in growing dreadlocks and dancing to reggae music was akin to jumping up and down.  Music was expensive as Uganda was recovering from the w [Read more]

Blog: Don't hate me because I love Bob Marley
Few people are indifferent about reggae?and when I say reggae, I'm really talking about Bob Marley, who represents the genre for casual fans much like Johnny Cash represents country music. While it's hard for me to accept that anyone could find Marley?s brilliant and incredibly human songwriting in any way unpleasant, I can understand why his fan base is a turn-off. Who's not annoyed by patchouli-soaked, trust-fund white kids hanging out in their dorms, smoking pot?er, ganja?and kicking around [Read more]

The king of pop's progressive impact
The responsibility of an artist representing an oppressed people is to make revolution irresistible. - Toni Cade Bambara Music has long been a vehicle for social change and a bridge across the racial divide.  Jackson's ability to reach the masses was uncanny, only rivaling that of international icons such as Jamaica's Bob Marley and Nigeria's Fela Kuti.  As a child he brought African-American soul music to the mainstream and in his adulthood revolutionized pop music with an array of global i [Read more]

The Big Gigs: Our critics' music picks
Alas, the Twin Cities are missing this summer's Rock the Bells tour again, but at least we're getting its two main headliners: Nas and Damian (Jr. Gong) Marley. Bob Marley's most versatile son has been producing a new record by the devilish Mr. Jones. Its working title, Distant Relatives, apparently references its theme of the common struggle between Africa and American ghettos. Sounds like something of a peace offering after Nas' last two fought-over albums, Hip Hop Is Dead and the Untitle [Read more]

The Columbus Dispatch, Ohio, Michael Arace Column: Michael Arace
By Michael Arace, The Columbus Dispatch, Ohio Jun. 24--Imagine a 5-foot-8, 155-pound blender. Inside it, place Bob Marley and the Wailers, a Clark Foam surfboard, some intense waves, a quart of mercury, a pint of golden pilsner and a hard, clean, slide tackle. This is Frankie Hejduk. He is a roiling vessel of energy. He is not meant to slow down, never mind stop. Only lately, he has been short-circuited. What's new in rock: Jun. 23
Bob Marley was always great at packing a lot of meaning into only a few words; his songs were always great, but never overcomplicated. According to his website, he said he always tried to explain things in a simple, common sense manner. In other words, if he explained it to a baby, the baby would understand. On B Is for Bob, his first collection made specifically for kids, Marley does just that with a little help from his son, Ziggy. The songs that are released in their original versions still s [Read more]

Donald Kinsey report
He’s traveled the world with legendary musicians such as Bob Marley and Albert King, but talking with guitarist Donald Kinsey, you get the sense that as long as he’s playing music, he’s always been close to home. Last Friday, Kinsey, 56, was back in his hometown of Gary, Ind., visiting with family and friends on his way home to Grand Rapids from blues singer Koko Taylor’s funeral in Chicago. Kinsey’s father, Lester “Big Daddy” Kinsey, was a musici [Read more]

The MidTones at Grand Star in Chinatown
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Most folks who aren't musicians -- and even some who are -- avoid open jam nights like the plague. They can be the source of endless guitar solos, out-of-tune vocals and people who promptly leave after they perform. That doesn't make for much of a hang out. But twice a month at the Grand Star in Chinatown, Shin Kawasaki is adding a new meaning to what an open jam can be. The night that I stopped by, I heard a Bob Marley song transition into Smoke on the Water as if [Read more]
